Tricia Appleton - Atlanta Psychiatrist for adults, children and adolescents While I have my own style as a therapist/psychiatrist, I pay close attention to being the kind of therapist you want.

Individual Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is self-exploration and change in the context of a healing professional therapy relationship. Accessing the inner wisdom and healing that lies within is a guiding principal for me. My style is eclectic, as I have incorporated what I have found most helpful from training in many types of psychotherapy.

My training in residency was psychodynamic (based on psychoanalytic principals, which is a theoretical background, but does not describe my style), as well as developmental. I have adopted a lot of what I have learned about experiential psychotherapy. Attachment theory, the study of how we develop in relationship, is of great interest to me.

You can see the pictures of my playroom where I see children in play therapy. Often adults like to use this room as well; creating and processing images in the sand trays can be a powerful tool to change and address both conscious process and that which is not yet conscious.

I work with individuals who are seeking growth in many different areas, including working through trauma; managing difficult feelings; leading a more developed and purposeful life; relationship concerns; addressing and healing from what has lead to symptoms of depression, mood instability, dissociation, anxiety, sleep disturbance, addiction, concentration and focus difficulties, self-defeating and self-destructive behaviors, concerns with self-esteem, food behavior and body relationship.

Play Therapy

You can see the pictures of my playroom. Children naturally use play to express and master what they are struggling with. Play therapy is allowing this to unfold in a safe and healing relationship. As children often do not yet have fully developed verbal skills for self-expression, play is the manner in which they process and grow.

When working with children in play therapy, I also see the family and parents as needed in the therapeutic process. It often becomes clear that the entire family is ready to work together on an issue. Filial Therapy is parents directly doing a form of play therapy with their children, and I work with interested parents on this as well.

I work with children presenting with a variety of challenges, including:

  • Behavioral difficulties at home or school
  • Social struggles
  • Academic difficulties, including those related to concentration and attention
  • Grief and loss experiences, including divorce
  • Attachment trauma
  • Concerns arising from adoption and multiple placements
  • Children who have experienced trauma
  • Mood instability
  • Symptoms of depression and anxiety
  • Separation anxiety

Family Therapy

Family therapy involves meeting with the entire family, and at times individuals or different members of the family in a therapy setting. Sand tray and the playroom may be used in family therapy as well.

Psych-K

Psych-K is an energy psychology technique that uses your whole brain and higher consciousness to change old, unhelpful core beliefs that operate and control behavior on a subconscious level.

EMDR

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a highly researched technique for treating trauma. EMDR involves using bilateral brain stimulation, i.e. through eye movement, sound, or tapping to facilitate the processing and resolution of trauma and overwhelming feelings.
